What is a same-day crown?

A same-day crown is a custom dental restoration bonded on top of a damaged or severely decaying tooth. Once placed, the crown covers all of the enamel above your gum line, restoring the tooth to its near-original shape, strength, and condition.

Traditionally, getting a dental crown took at least two appointments. At Davidson Dental Group, Dr. Davidson has a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) machine on-site. The technology allows her to create a custom crown that fits perfectly in less than an hour.

Why would I need a same-day crown?

At Davidson Dental Group, Dr. Davidson uses same-day crowns to:

• Protect weak or damaged teeth
• Hold a dental bridge in place
• Restore a dental implant
• Cover a tooth treated with a root canal
• Restore a severely worn down tooth

What does getting a same-day crown involve?

At Davidson Dental Group, getting a same-day crown is a quick and convenient procedure.

First, Dr. Davidson reviews your dental health history and asks about your symptoms. Next, she conducts an oral exam and takes X-rays. If you have a damaged, decaying, or worn down tooth, Dr. Davidson moves forward.

She administers a local anesthetic and prepares your tooth to receive a crown. To do that, Dr. Davidson removes a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides of your tooth. Then, she takes digital scans of your tooth and uploads them to a computer design program.

Dr. Davidson uses the program to design a custom dental crown. Once she’s completed the design, Dr. Davidson uploads it to the on-site milling machine. The milling machine uses Dr. Davidson’s design and manufactures a custom crown from a block of ceramic.

While the machine creates your crown, you can read a book, take a nap, or play on your smartphone. Once your crown is ready, Dr. Davidson bonds it in place, polishes your tooth, and provides care instructions.

How long do same-day crowns last?

Same-day crowns typically last about a decade* on average, but it’s possible to extend their use by practicing good oral hygiene. Dr. Davidson recommends:

• Brushing your teeth twice daily
• Flossing before going to bed
• Visiting Davidson Dental Group every six months for an oral exam and teeth cleaning
• Avoiding bad habits like biting hard items, such as ice or your nails. Avoid opening packaging with your teeth
• Wear a mouthguard, if you have been diagnosed, to address TMJ and biting problems
