Teeth Whitening Q&A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that removes stains from the surface of your teeth. Specifically, it uses ingredients like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to oxidize the molecules deep within your tooth enamel. The oxidation process makes the stains lighter, transforming the aesthetic appearance of your smile.

What causes teeth to change color?

Teeth change color for various reasons, but the most common culprit is the natural aging process. Years of brushing, flossing, biting, and chewing cause your enamel to wear down, making the yellow dentin underneath more visible.

Other factors that might contribute to tooth discoloration include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Drinking dark beverages like coffee or black tea
  • Eating certain foods like berries or tomatoes
  • Oral trauma
  • Taking medication with tetracycline

You might also develop stained or discolored teeth as a result of poor oral hygiene. That’s especially true if you don’t visit Davidson Dental Group at least two times each year.

What does teeth whitening involve?

At Davidson Dental Group, teeth whitening is a quick outpatient procedure that takes about 90 minutes.

Before whitening your teeth, Dr. Davidson covers your gums and tongue with a protective rubber dam. Then, she applies the Zoom whitening solution to each of your teeth. After the solution rests for a while, Dr. Davidson points a special light at your teeth, triggering a whitening reaction.

Dr. Davidson follows the same steps several times until you’ve achieved your desired shade of white. Afterward, she provides tips on how to maintain your results.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

The results of Zoom teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they usually last 4-6* months and sometimes longer. To reduce the risk of stains and additional buildup, Dr. Davidson recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Visiting Davidson Dental Group every six months for professional teeth cleaning
  • Drinking dark beverages from a straw
  • Quitting tobacco use

Since oral trauma can also cause tooth discoloration, it’s a good idea to wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports.

How much does teeth whitening cost?

The cost of teeth whitening varies depending on your goals and the amount of whitening solution required. Following an oral exam and an in-office discussion, Dr. Davidson can provide you with an estimate.
