Dentophobia - Fear of Going to the Dentist - How to Deal With It?

Dentophobia is a fear of going to the dentist. People with this specific phobias feel anxious when they think about going to the dentist or when actually visiting the dentist.  Past negative experiences, family history, or feeling a loss of control can lead to dentophobia.

Dentophobia is a more serious condition than anxiety. It leaves people panic - stricken and terrified. People with dentophobia have an awareness that the fear is totally irrational, but are unable to do much about it....

The first way you can deal with dentophobia is deep breathing. Deep breathing can help with stress and can give a sense of relief. The second way to deal with dentophobia is to meditate. Meditation is a technique used to help to calm and to relieve stress. Meditating is definitely along the same lines as deep breathing and together can yield powerful results that can enable one to feel more in tune with their emotions and in control.  Another useful tool is to treat each experience as a new moment in time, and to try and avoid recalling past experiences that illicit a negative response.

Once the techniques become habitual then visitng the dental office for Preventive Care can become more tolerable and even pleasurable since the patient is now overcoming a fear and empowering themselves to take control of their overall mental and dental health.

Our office offers Nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative and will not knock you out. You might feel so relaxed that you will want to fall asleep, but the gas will leave you concsious and completely responsive to verbal commands throughout the procedure.  It also works very rapidly and is very safe for the brain, heart, liver, lungs and kidneys.

Come visit us at Davidson Dental Group where we take extra special care for  those with Dentophobia and can provide nitrous oxide as needed.
